Description: One of the big reasons it is the Year of the Anacostia is that we are celebrating the 200th Anniversary of the birth of Frederick Douglass, the "Lion of Anacostia."
Long before he settled near the Anacostia River, Frederick Douglass dreamed about his freedom, imagining that he might float out of bondage on a sailboat in the Chesapeake Bay. At various points, bodies of water would encourage Douglass to envision a free life, to seek refuge from racism, and to develop new strategies in his efforts to transform the United States.
Our speaker this month is Christopher Bonner, Professor of History at the University of Maryland. Professor Bonner specializes in early 19th Century American History.
