Volunteer for the Anacostia Watershed Society's 5K Race for the River

Thirty-five years ago, to see the true potential of our urban river took a special vision. Few imagined that the Anacostia River would become a cherished destination for boating, hiking, bicycling, and city living.

This year, we lace up our running shoes and celebrate our commitment to restoring and protecting the Anacostia River and its surrounding watershed with our 5k Race for the River! Racers will compete in the 5k race and/or the more leisurely fun run/walk. There will be food, music, and educational exhibits, there's something for everyone. We need YOU to help us make our 5K Race for the River a success! The Anacostia Watershed Society seeks volunteer assistance for the following roles:

• Set-Up & Tabling - 6 AM - 10 AM
  • Volunteers will work with AWS staff to set-up tables, registration, refreshments, etc. upon arriving. After set-up volunteers will be assigned to assist AWS staff with working the registration table, refreshment table, or wherever needed (ages 13 and up, if under 18, please plan to volunteer with an adult guardian).
     
• Parking & Shuttle Directors - 7 AM - 10:30 AM
  • Volunteers will direct parking traffic to help racers find parking and/or the shuttle so they'll start their day off on the right foot before the race begins at Buddy Attick Lake Park. (18 and up ONLY).
     
• Course Marshal on Race Day - 7:30 AM - 11 AM
  • Volunteers will help to direct racers, making sure they're on the right path., and cheer them on! (ages 13 and up, if under 18, please plan to volunteer with an adult guardian).
     
• Water Station - 8 AM - 11 AM
  • Volunteers will set up water tables for racers and will help to distribute water to racers during the race. (ages 13 and up, if under 18, please plan to volunteer with an adult guardian).
     
• Canoe Prep & Launching - 8 AM - 1 PM
  • Volunteers will work with AWS staff to check participants in for canoeing, distribute life jackets, and launch participants in canoes onto Greenbelt Lake. (ages 13 and up, if under 18, please plan to volunteer with an adult guardian).
     
• Breakdown & Clean-up - 11 AM - 1 PM
  • Volunteers will work with AWS staff to breakdown tables, cleanup the site, and load materials (tables, chairs, etc.) into AWS vehicles, making sure we leave no trace behind! (ages 13 and up, if under 18, please plan to volunteer with an adult guardian).

We hope you will join us as we celebrate all the ways the Anacostia River is rebounding:

• Ospreys, eagles, shad, mussels and even river otters are returning to call the river "home."
• New forests of riverside trees, colonies of aquatic plants, and swaths of thriving wetlands now surround the river.
• Miles of riverfront trails now connect residents to the Anacostia River, making the vision of a clean and healthy waterway clear to all.
