Join the Anacostia Watershed Society for a boat tour on the Anacostia River to explore the ecological and historical changes that have occurred in the river and in the communities around the river. We will have the opportunity to witness some of the restoration of river habitats and how it has caused the rebound of the wildlife in the Anacostia River.
Meeting Location: We will gather at the boat ramp at Kingman Island. To get there, enter Kingman & Heritage Islands Park from the parking lot, take the main path over the bridge to Heritage Island, continue to cross over the second bridge to Kingman Island, follow the main path (straight) to connect to Kingman Trail, when the path ends to a split take the trail left and follow it until you see a gazebo. The gazebo is right by the boat ramp! Click here for directions from the entrance to the boat ramp. These directions are from the closest parking lot to the park. Walking from this parking lot to the ramp takes anywhere from 12 - 20 minutes and is about 0.6 miles one way. If you park further away, it will be a longer walk.
If driving, we recommend parking right by the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail! It will be the closest walk to the entrance of the park. Click here to see where we recommend parking. Drive under the metro bridge to find that parking section. Additional parking is available right by the fields as well. Please be aware that the further you park from Kingman & Heritage Islands Park, the longer the walk will be to the boat ramp. Please make sure to arrive early to find parking and make the walk to the ramp!
The address to Kingman & Heritage Islands Park is 575 Oklahoma Ave NE. The park is accessible via Bike Trail (Anacostia Tributary Trail System: Anacostia River Trail). The closest bus stop to the main entrance of the park is located near the intersection of Benning Rd. NE and Oklahoma Ave. NE. This bus stop can be accessed via the X1, X2, and X3 buses. The Metro Station closest to the main park entrance is the Stadium-Armory Station. The park can also be accessed from the Minnesota Ave station.
Physical Level of Difficulty: Moderate
What to Wear/Bring: We recommend wearing sunscreen and a hat and bringing water.
